Flowers dried with silica gel powder retain their shape, structure and color. Wild violets, zinnias, daisies, daffodils and geraniums are ideally suited to be dried with silica gel.

Fine silica gel powder (0.5-1.5 mm) the ideal product for drying flowers. Comes in a lockable plastic pot. The silica gel will quickly remove the moisture from the flowers so that they retain their shape and color without withering or digesting. Flowers dried with silica gel powder retain their shape, structure and color. Wild violets, zinnias, daisies, daffodils and geraniums are ideally suited to be dried with silica gel.

Instructions:

  • Sprinkle a 2-3 cm layer of silica gel in the plastic container with the airtight lid. Can be sealed airtight with adhesive tape.
  • Place the flowers, petals or leaves on the silica gel crystals so that they do not cover each other. Most flowers need to be placed upright in the crystals, but some species, such as the gerbera or the daisy, are better placed upside down.
  • Gently scoop the silica gel around the flowers so that you do not damage or crush the petals. Cover all the petals and fill in the cracks. Continue to add silica gel until the flowers are completely covered. If the container is deep, a few layers of flowers can be dried in this way. It is preferable to put flowers of a kind in the same container: they are all ready at the same time.
  • Close the dish with the airtight lid. The drying time varies, but you should check the flowers after two or three days. Roses need about ten days and orchids about two weeks. Keep a notebook and note the drying times of the different flower types.
  • If the flowers feel papery, they can be brought out.
     This is possible in two ways:use a spoon and carefully scoop out the flowers;
       tilt the container and carefully remove the flowers.
  • Use small paintbrushes to remove all residual silica gel from the flowers.

The silica gel looks like white granulated sugar and is harmless. It is synthetic sand SiO2. You can let the silica gel dry and use it again. Depending on the type of flour / essential oil content, the silica gel will decrease in capacity. Reuse of silica gel Silica gel absorbs water. The water can be removed from it in an oven or microwave. The oven must be heated between 120 and 150 degrees Celsius. Place the silica gel on a baking foil or aluminum foil. The duration differs per weight but can be calculated with approximately 1 hour per 500 grams. If the discolouration has taken place, the process is complete. When using a microwave oven it should be set to medium (about 700 watts). Check every 5 minutes if the silica gel is discolored. The silica gel can be stirred with a spoon so that the wet gel becomes free again. The method and implementation of reuse is at your own risk.
